Summer camp cost, financial aid and tax benefits
By Joe C., founder of Booka. Reviewed October 2026.
Camp prices vary more than almost any other family expense: from town recreation programs that cost little to overnight specialty camps priced like a semester. The headline price is only part of the picture. Here is how to compare, and where help exists.
What camps in the Booka directory charge
From the 133 listings that publish a weekly price (mostly 2026 prices, as the camps state them). Using each camp's lowest published weekly price:
- Day camps (127): half start at or below $325 a week, and a quarter start above $400.
What the price usually covers
Ask each camp what is included and what is extra. For day camp, extras can include lunch, extended care before and after, transportation, field trips, and a camp shirt. For overnight camp, tuition often covers lodging, meals, activities and on-site medical care, while extras can include transportation, canteen or spending money, laundry, horseback riding, trips, and tips for staff.
Ways to pay less
- Early registration discounts, sibling discounts and multi-week discounts. Ask: not every camp advertises them.
- Financial aid and scholarships. Many camps, especially nonprofit ones, set aside funds and decide based on need. Apply early, because the money is limited.
- Payment plans. Many camps split tuition into installments.
- Town, YMCA and nonprofit programs, which are often lower-priced than private camps for similar activities.
- Camp-specific discounts, such as for members of a museum, club or house of worship.
On Booka, you can filter for camps that say they offer financial aid.
How financial aid works
Aid is usually need-based and reviewed by the camp, sometimes with a form and documents, and a decision weeks later. Ask for the deadline and how many awards are typical. It does not hurt your chances to ask, and the conversation is usually confidential. If a camp says it does not offer aid, ask whether it knows of local funds for camp, such as community foundations and houses of worship.
Tax benefits: day camp can qualify, overnight camp does not
In the United States, the cost of day camp can qualify for two dependent care benefits when it lets you work or look for work and your child is under 13: a dependent care flexible spending account through an employer, and the child and dependent care tax credit. Overnight camp does not qualify. Educational programs, such as tutoring or lessons, are generally treated differently from day camp that provides care.
For 2026, employer benefits guidance puts the household limit for a dependent care flexible spending account at $7,500, though plans can set lower limits. The credit applies to a share of up to $3,000 of expenses for one child or $6,000 for two or more, with the share depending on income. You cannot use the same dollars for both. Rules change and depend on your situation, so check the IRS guidance for dependent care and talk to a tax professional before you rely on it.
Comparing real costs
Add up the whole cost for the weeks you need: tuition, extended care, transportation, extras and anything you would have to spend anyway to cover those weeks. A cheaper camp that needs before and after care can cost more than a pricier camp that includes it. A longer session is often a better value per week than several short ones.
Common questions
- Is overnight camp tax deductible?
- No. Overnight camp does not qualify for the child and dependent care credit or a dependent care flexible spending account. Day camp may qualify if it lets you work or look for work.
- How early should I apply for financial aid?
- As early as the camp allows, usually in the winter. Aid funds are limited and some camps decide in order of application.
- Do camps charge extra beyond tuition?
- Many do. Ask about transportation, extended care, trips, laundry, specialty activities and spending money.
