When to register for summer camp: a timeline

By Joe C., founder of Booka. Reviewed October 2026.

Popular camps fill early, and many families make their choice between the fall and early spring. You do not have to decide by January, but the earlier you start, the more choice you have, and the more time you have for aid applications.

A rough timeline

Every camp is different. Check each camp's own page for its dates, and join its interest list to hear when booking opens.

How registration usually works

Camps may open registration on a set date, sometimes first to returning families, then to everyone. Some use a lottery for popular sessions. You will usually pay a deposit and the balance later. Read the cancellation and refund policy before you pay. If a camp says registration opens on a date, set a reminder: spots at popular camps can go within hours or days.

Waitlists

If a session is full, join the waitlist. Spots often open as families change plans, especially in spring. Ask the camp how the waitlist is ordered, how you will be told, and how long you have to say yes. On Booka, when a camp offers a spot to the next family on its waitlist, you get an email with a link that holds the spot for a set number of hours.

If you are looking late

Many day camps and programs run by towns, nonprofits and museums have space into spring or even summer. Overnight camps may have openings in particular sessions or for older campers. Ask about cancellations, and be flexible about weeks.

Common questions

When does summer camp registration open?
Many camps open registration between the fall and early spring, but it varies. Check each camp's page, and join its interest list on Booka to hear when booking opens.
Is it too late to find a camp in April?
Not necessarily. Popular sessions may be full, but many day camps and some overnight sessions still have space. Join waitlists and be flexible about weeks.
How do waitlists work?
When a spot opens, the camp contacts the next family. Ask how the order works and how long you have to answer.
